Airtel Broadband has some new absurdly priced broadband plans

Airtel seems to have overhauled their tariff plans at least for the Delhi NCR region. Some of the popular old plans are not visible in the new structure at all. And they have added a bunch of new overpriced plans offering 8/16mbps speeds.

Here is the basic information of the new plans available:

Electric 30 GB: 30GB at 16mbps. 512kbps FUP speed Rs. 1699 plus taxes
Electric 50 GB: 50GB at 16mbps. 512kbps FUP speed Rs. 2199 plus taxes
Electric 80 GB: 80GB at 16mbps. 512kbps FUP speed Rs. 2599 plus taxes
Electric 175 GB: 175GB at 16mbps. 512kbps FUP speed Rs. 3299 plus taxes

Rapid 15 GB: 15GB at 8mbps. 256kbps FUP speed Rs. 1299 plus taxes
Rapid 30 GB: 30GB at 8mbps. 256kbps FUP speed Rs. 1599 plus taxes
Rapid 80 GB: 80GB at 8mbps. 256kbps FUP Speed Rs. 2099 plus taxes
Rapid 175 GB: 175GB at 8mbps. 256kbps FUP speed Rs. 2599 plus taxes

Turbo 15 GB: 15GB at 4mbps. 256kbps FUP speed Rs. 1199 plus taxes
Turbo 30 GB: 30GB at 4mbps. 256kbps FUP speed Rs. 1499 plus taxes
Turbo 80 GB: 80GB at 4mbps. 256kbps FUP speed Rs. 1899 plus taxes

They seem to have discontinued older 75GB/150GB plans available at 2/4mbps. The only plan offering more than 100GB bandwidth per month now costs Rs. 2599/3299 plus taxes! Basically, they are now charging more for the same amount of data transfer offering faster speeds. Faster speeds are great but there are some major problems here. Very few online services require speeds of 8mbps or 16mbps. So, you are essentially paying more to check your email or social networking with your friends on these new plans.

Also, airtel does not highlight the upload speeds on their plans. So, the upload speeds on 8/16mbps plans is expected to remain similar to what they offer on 1/2/4mbps plans. You are going to get around 800kbps as the maximum upload speed. So, you are going to get same speeds while uploading photos on your Facebook account no matter how expensive or fast your broadband account is on airtel broadband.
