Akismet has now handled 50 billion spam comments!

Akismet team has revealed that their anti-spam platform has caught more than 50 billion piece of content since the very beginning.

Akismet has enabled bloggers to focus on content while it took care of the spammy comments on their blog posts. It has been so accurate in dealing with spam comments that most of us have pretty much forgotten about the days when we spent hours cleaning up the mess left by spammers.

Spam comments however are not going anywhere. In fact, the problem seems to be growing even today. Akismet handled around 1.8 billion spam comments in last month alone! It comes to around 700 spam comments every second.

The project started as a WordPress plugin though is now used by more than just blogs.
