Apple is rumored to be in talks to acquire Waze. This deal would of course be focused on their mapping service on iOS devices which has become a huge embarrassment for the company.

Google recently launched Google Maps for Apple iOS which has become a huge hit amongst the iPhone users globally.

Waze is of course a popular third party mapping and navigation platform with apps for all major smartphone platforms.

It is powered by contributors around the world who help in improving the maps manually or simply by driving around.

Apple could improve their mapping platform significantly if they manage to get hold of the data from Waze. Remains to be seen how the open source community would respond to such an acquisition.
