Automatic Message Translation, Smart Mute and Title Tweaks are out of Gmail Labs

Google has moved some features out of Gmail Labs. Automatic Message Translation, Smart Mute and Title Tweaks are now part of the regular Gmail experience.

Automatic Message Translation is of course the most useful one of the lost. Gmail tries to translate messages in other languages to the user’s native language.

Users get the option to block the feature for certain languages. They can also tell Gmail to do the processing automatically.

Title Tweaks was a pretty Labs feature and it is good to have it turned on by default now. Gmail would show “Inbox (20) - [email protected] - Gmail” instead of “Gmail - Inbox (20) - [email protected]” in the tab title. The idea is to give more preference to the number of unread mails.

Smart Mute is the third Labs feature to become a regular functionality in Gmail. This one is aimed to automatically mute messages in mailing lists which include your email address.

There is however some sad news for users of some other Gmail Labs functionalities. Google is going to discontinue a bunch of them in the coming weeks. These are: Old Snakey, Mail Goggles, Mouse Gestures, Hide Unread Counts, Move Icon Column, Inbox Preview, Custom Date Formats and SMS in Chat gadget.

I am sure that people are going to get annoyed with discontinuation of some of these labs features. Inbox Preview is something that I like to have and would miss when it is removed from my account.
