Dropbox killing public folders for new accounts from August

Dropbox has made an announcement that is likely to limit the capabilities of new accounts created after July 31st.

The company would disable the feature to create public folders in the new accounts.

The feature would work as advertised on existing accounts.

Dropbox said that they recently switched to a new sharing mechanism that lets the user share files and folders using a link.

The company added:

After July 31, 2012, we will no longer create Public folders in any new Dropbox accounts. If your app depends on Public folders, we recommend switching to the /shares API call. Public folders in existing accounts, however, will continue to function as before.
