Ars Technica has confirmed that Facebook is now deleting photos properly in a reasonable period of time. This applies on photos that are marked for deletion by their users.
The company has been criticized for not having a proper system in place to ensure that the images marked for deletion were actually deleted from their servers.
Ars Technica said that Facebook has informed that their new storage system is now in place which enables them to do this.
Ars Technica had previously reported that images marked for deletion remained on Facebook servers for years even though they were not accessible from their user interface.
The new changes are more proactive in actually deleting the images from various CDNs operated by the company around the world.
Facebook spoke about the new policy in place now:
As a result of work on our policies and infrastructure, we have instituted a ‘max-age’ of 30 days for our CDN links. However, in some cases the content will expire on the CDN much more quickly, based on a number of factors.
