Google announced yesterday that they have been given approval by the Chinese regulatory bodies to acquire Motorola Mobility.

One of the conditions they had to agree to was that they would keep the Android mobile platform free to everyone for at least next five years.

Google Android is technically an open source platform and anyone is free to use it on their devices.

Google has some restrictions for the manufacturers if they decide to bundle Google apps on their products.

Android is already being forked by other companies to create their own mobile platforms. Amazon has done it with Kindle Fire. Baidu is another company that has created its own mobile platform based on Android.
