François Beaufort has another scoop related to Chrome.

Google is apparently working on a multi-platform chat client that is being developed as a packaged Chrome app.

This means it would run on any device that runs Chrome including Chromebooks and Chromeboxes.

Right now, the app only support IRC but XMPP (Google Talk) support is expected to come soon.

Incidentally, Google already has another Chrome Web App named Chat that works with Google Talk.

Remains to be seen why this new app. Maybe they are finally going to use Meego’s tech to offer a unified messenger solution that connects to all popular IM platforms?
