Google Maps 6.0 for Android launched with indoor maps support!


Google has released a major update of their Maps app for the Android platform.

Google Maps 6.0 for Android is now available for download from the Android Market.

The app now feature support for indoor maps. This feature is currently in beta and a few locations are available with indoor data.

This feature is designed to make it easy for you to explore airports, shopping malls and retail stores. Remains to be seen how useful it would be for the generic mobile user around the world. Support is likely to be restricted to popular places in the US market in the coming months. Some locations in Japan are also present right now.

Google highlighted some destinations where you can tryout this new feature like Mall of America in Minneapolis and San Francisco International Airport. Google detailed:

Mall of America, IKEA, The Home Depot, select Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s, Daimaru, Takashimaya and Mitsukoshi locations and more. Watch an IKEA demo here.
Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), Chicago O’Hare (ORD), San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and Narita International (NRT), among others.
