Google is rolling out major updates to their Product Search platform and it is likely to cause a major disruption in this market.
The company is renaming the platform as Google Shopping. And they are turning into a ‘purely commercial model’.
Basically, the company would run sponsored ads on their search result pages for keywords related to products. All of these promoted content would be clearly labeled as ‘Sponsored’ but the previews show that Google would not be using a different background color for these promotions.

This new product discovery experience will be called Google Shopping and the transition will be complete this fall. We believe that having a commercial relationship with merchants will encourage them to keep their product information fresh and up to date. Higher quality data—whether it’s accurate prices, the latest offers or product availability—should mean better shopping results for users, which in turn should create higher quality traffic for merchants.
