Google working on merging Talk, Messenger and Hangouts?

Janko Roettgers is reporting that Google is working on merging their three communications platform Google Talk, Google Plus Messenger and Google Plus Hangouts.

Google Talk is available on both desktops and mobile. Google Plus Messenger is restricted to Google Android and Apple iOS devices. Google Plus Hangouts is also part of Google Plus though is available on desktop platforms as well.

Google Product Manager Nikhyl Singhal has been quoted as saying that they have done a bad job of offering similar services through different platforms and they are working on merging them into a single platform.

It is not clear how it would work out considering Google Talk is based on an open protocol and is accessible from third party apps like Pidgin.
