Imgur has announced that they are supporting the protests against SOPA and PIPA.
They are one of the most popular image sharing services on the web today. Reddit users essentially rely upon it for all image hosting.
Imgur said in a message:
We will be altering our standard service by blacking out the Imgur gallery on January 18th from 8am-8pm EST and replacing it with a message about how the PIPA/SOPA legislation threatens sites like Imgur with methods to take action. It is important to note that our paid account holders will still have access to the service.
Imgur is a good example of a useful web service that would be severely affected by SOPA and PIPA. The service allows anyone to upload any image that can be shared on the web. They have a proper mechanism in place to request deletion of images for a suitable reason. But SOPA would easily result in a permanent block on the service for copyright infringement in the US market.
