Indian government has given its approval to voice over 4G LTE if the operator is willing to pay an additional fee of $306 million.
This is good news for companies like Reliance Industries and Airtel both of which have licenses to offer 4G services in the Indian market.
Both Reliance and Airtel had been putting pressure on the government to allow voice as it enables them to offer their services on smartphones.
Airtel incidentally is already offering a hybrid solution where data is accessed through their LTE network but voice goes through the 3G network.
The new policy would let them offer simpler solutions as soon as the handsets supporting their local networks are on sale in the Indian market.
