Indian Cellular Association has expressed disappointment with how Datawind is managing the Aakash project.
They want government to reconsider the project and hire a bigger company to handle the manufacturing and distribution.
Indian Cellular Association further said that the government can ensure the made in India status by requiring the new partner to ensure that the IP, brand and ownership of the product remains in Indian hands.
Datawind is however not impressed. The company responded in a statement: “The cheapest tablets made by ICA members are not less than Rs 15,000. Why did they not compete in the tender floated by IIT Rajasthan? They are most welcome to participate in the forthcoming tenders. Their tablet products don’t serve 97 per cent of the Indian mass market. Ten months after the project was signed, they are now finding fault.”
