Indian Telecom and HRD Minister Kapil Sibal has admitted that the first generation Aakash project did not work out as per their expectations.

There were issues with production and delivery and they are now distancing themselves from Datawind which was in charge of the first generation model.

C-DAC and ITI are now involved in the development of the second generation model that should go on sale later this year.

It would feature improved specifications and should cost around the same as the first generation model.

He said:

There have been some problem with Datawind I must confess. Therefore, I have got into the act. IT Ministry has got C-DAC and ITI into the act and I am going to ensure that this product is fully indigenous and truly an Indian product.
