One Punch Man Episode 5 opens with a group of officials discussing Mumen rider. It is decided that he will maintain his position at the top of class C, and they wonder why he has no desire to advance. Then they move onto the hero exam and bring up a person of interest. It’s not hard to guess: Saitama is not the one under investigation. It’s Genos. Since more candidates applied that year than ever before, they decide to increase the difficulty of the test.
Naturally, Saitama breezes through the physical test, embarrassing everyone watching. He destroys each station beyond repair. At the end of the test, Genos enters the locker room Saitama is in and shows off his “S” rank. In other words, he passed both tests, the written and the physical, with perfect scores. Saitama slowly extracts his test results from the manila envelope and stops halfway. They both assume that he has also been granted an “S”, but it is easy to deduce that the letter is most likely a “C”. He doesn’t bother to fully extract the page.
The Ultimate Master In Episode 5
Genos then asks Saitama if he was an interview about the House of Evolution, but he wasn’t. Genos again assumes that they had no need for further questioning since he already admitted it. Saitama finally reveals his entire test score, proving that he was only ranked “C”. He doesn’t get much time to pout before they are summoned by the officials for the briefing. An experienced hero brings them up to speed but gets annoyed when Saitama ignores him. He even threatens their rank, but his rage goes unnoticed. Saitama is so completely desensitised to any intensity that it doesn’t even register.
The Unsurpassed Master
We are treated to another hint as to the depths of Saitama’s power in One Punch Man episode 5. Genos and Saitama meet in an open canyon area after Saitama agrees to fight. Genos explains more about the hero system. As they work and gain popularity, it’s possible that they will eventually obtain hero names. Then Genos begs him to go all out and fight with full power. The intensity dials up with the music, and he prepares for an all out attack. We are treated to yet another jaw-dropping display of power and skill as Genos destroys the canyons around them.
Saitama dodges all the attacks with bland, effortless precision, and is more concerned with burning his clothes than getting hurt. After dodging a few more times, he easily avoids an explosive blast and taps Genos on the shoulder to declare victory. But Genos feels unfulfilled, and asks his new master once again to go all out. Before he can continue, Saitama dashes in front of him in the blink of an eye dodges he incoming attack, and attacks from behind. His punch closes in with such mind-bending intensity that Genos freezes, unable to respond. Only death awaits.
Saitama stops the punch an inch from Genos’ face, but the force of the blow completely wipes out the canyons behind them. This is to be seen as a hint and a warning, but it is well intentioned. Saitama ends the fight in good nature and invites Genos out to dinner. Genos doesn’t move at first, still in awe at his master’s power. Saitama mistakes his hesitation for a refusal of the proposed choice of food.
The Hero Association They Deserve
It’s revealed in One Punch Man episode 5 that the Hero Association has only been active for three years, but there have been 55 tests so far. This helps explain how quickly and easily the two can take the test. It was created because the child of a wealthy person was saved by a bystander. Now, heroes can work proudly and be known around the world.
Unfortunately, Genos remembers the promise Saitama made and declares himself as a disciple. Saitama immediately regrets his decision.
An unnamed actor of some sort gets a phone call in his dressing room. The caller says that they found the cyborg and that it passed the hero test.
Back at the Hero Association headquarters, the hero who briefed them and a presumably high-ranking official discuss the two. The hero hates them both, mostly Saitama, and wonders how they passed. The official claims that Genos passed with perfect scores, surpassing the hero, and that Saitama failed the written test but was an incredible physical specimen with the body of a god.
The frustrated hero is unable to accept these results and attacks Saitama in the next scene. He loses pitifully.
A Warm-ish Welcome
The actor seen previously in One Punch Man episode 5 is seen talking on the phone and says he will meet with Genos soon. Genos and Saitama are already at the restaurant and are preparing to order Udon noodles when Saitama spots a “spicy food” contest and challenges Genos to another duel. It’s probably because he is mostly a cyborg that Genos wins the contest with ease. Soon after, Amai Mask, class A, rank 1, who is also the actor, enters the shop and requests a conversation with Genos. The rest of the patrons recognise him immediately and fawn over his good looks.
They go outside to talk, but it is very brief. When he returns, he claims that Amai Mask merely welcomed him. The short conversation was enough to convince the other patrons that they were friends and they asked to shake his hands with him. Saitama is clearly jealous. Later, they talk more about being professional heroes on the walk home, and Saitama expresses the benefits of being S-class while urging them both to do their best. Genos recalls his conversation with Mask. It went more or less as he described but wasn’t quite as friendly as he suggested. He stops abruptly and says he needs to leave.
The last scene of One Punch Man episode 5 shows Amai Mask on the balcony of his penthouse suite, recalling his conversation with Genos.
