Prepare for more blocks on the web as Gangs of Wasseypur is releasing

Viacom18 seems to have obtained a John Doe order for their upcoming movie Gangs of Wasseypur to get ISPs operating in the country to prevent piracy of the flick.

This order is similar in nature to previous blocks obtained by Reliance Entertainment.

This means that file sharing and video streaming services are likely to get blocked by our internet service providers.

Airtel just recently removed the block on some of the torrent services along with Vimeo. We expect the block to be implemented in the coming days to meet the requirements of the order.

Of course, the court order does not instruct the ISPs to block entire domains. It only requires them to block access to links providing access to the movie itself. But ISPs in India have taken the easy way around by completely blocking access to the most popular web services involved in file sharing creating a nuisance for legit users of these services.

Director of the movie Anurag Kashyap has stated that he would try to ensure that legit services are not blocked. Let’s see what happens!
