Swisscom has installed its convergent IPTV and Internet solution at the Hilton Frankfurt. The solution delivers HD live-TV and VOD plus Internet access through the hotel’s telephone system. Pioneering the use of VDSL technology for hotel IPTV solutions, this Swisscom deployment represents a breakthrough in terms of network technology. It positions Swisscom uniquely to maximise the benefits of IP convergence, irrespective of the hotel’s actual network infrastructure.

Hilton Frankfurt, located in the heart of the city, is a prime venue for international business travellers with 342 guest rooms and comprehensive conferencing facilities. Guests benefit from wired and wireless Internet access, digital TV with more than 70 channels from all over the world, an extensive library of new SD/HD blockbusters and a series of innovative short documentaries in HD quality. All services are delivered through the hotel’s phone system, making best use of VDSL technology. Even the hotel’s digital signage and business centre run on this infrastructure. Managing the hotel’s services remotely through its 24/7 Network Operations Centre, Swisscom can provide bandwidth dynamically, allowing up to 60 Mb/s download speed to meet guests’ individual requirements.

Swisscom’s new convergent guest room solution means a critical service innovation to the Hilton Frankfurt. Thanks to Swisscom’s careful engineering the hotel was able to keep the capital expenditures far below the level of investment that would have been required for a complete network overhaul.

Swisscom IPTV has been deployed in nearly 5’000 guest rooms since its market launch in 2009. The solution supports a fully interactive user interface and permits personalised guest services. Both TV channels and videos are organised to reflect the guest’s nationality and viewing preferences as defined in the Property Management System. Furthermore, the hotel can propose a variety of service bundles combining HSIA, VoD, Voice and business centre services in different combinations. Swisscom’s range of extra services creates additional value: Users can print their boarding passes from their rooms, access hundreds of e-newspapers and check the status of their flights in real-time, be it on the TV screen or through their laptop.

Leo Brand, CEO of Swisscom Hospitality Services comments: “I am very proud to service Hilton Frankfurt and to see our complete guest services implemented on VDSL technology. This is a proof of our ability to meet the hotel’s IT needs through one converged network, whether on Cat 5/ Cat 6 or the hotel’s telephone system. Through this implementation Hilton and Swisscom emphasize their long-term partnership. Our next generation of services, which uses the existing up-to-date IP infrastructure in Hilton hotels, will further differentiate the Hilton brand further from its competitors.”

Swisscom is a preferred provider of IPTV / VOD solutions and high-speed Internet access (HSIA) services for Hilton Hotels in Europe. The company presently serves more than 50 European Hilton hotels with managed Internet services for guestroom, meetings space and business centres. After the Hilton Dalaman Resort in Turkey, the Hilton Frankfurt is the second Hilton location to benefit from Swisscom’s convergent IPTV and HSIA solution.
