Spotify is set to announce something new later today. Industry sources say that the company would launch their own app platform that would allow third party developers to offer new features on their service.

This would be similar to how Facebook apps work. Spotify’s music player would be the platform where these third party apps would work.

Reports talk about some examples… An app could display lyrics to the song being played. Another app could showcase the future events featuring the musician related to the current song. And so on.

Initially, the apps are likely to be restricted to their desktop app. though Spotify could expand the program to add functionalities to their official mobile apps too.
