ZTE has announced that they are collaborating with Mozilla to develop mobile devices powered by Firefox OS.

The company said that they plan to showcase some prototype devices running this new mobile platform later this year or early next.

ZTE seems to be interested in diversifying their product portfolio. They are currently focused on Android powered smartphones.

The company said:

We are trying to increase our efforts in coming up with our own operating system, while introducing products based on Android. It’s all part of our wider plans to create a better balance of products using various operating systems. We won’t just rely on Android or Windows.

Deutsche Telekom, Sprint, Smart, Telecom Italia, Telenor and Etisalat are some other companies that have confirmed their support for the Firefox OS platform.
